Principal’s January Newsletter

Dear Parents,

I hope you enjoyed this beautiful season with your families and friends.  Personally, I want to thank you for the generous gifts that I received from many of you.  I am very grateful and appreciative, but I, previously, have received the greatest gift.  This gift is in the form of the supportive families that we are blessed to have at Queen of the Rosary Catholic Academy.  Each day as we continue striving to ensure that our community is further strengthened I am reminded of the many positive things that we have to offer.

This month we have much to look forward to.  Some of the things that we have to look forward to are our:

  1. Catholic Schools Week, which begins on January 23, 2017. Details will follow.
  2. Mid-Trimester Progress Reports: Progress Reports will be distributed on Wednesday, January 25, 2017.
  3. Home Academy Association’s meeting. The meeting will be Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at 6:00p.m.  All are invited to attend.  If you cannot attend, know that your input is vitally important, so all ideas are welcome.
  4. Clubs for the Second Trimester. The clubs have been determined.  Information will be distributed this month.
  5. Coding: Grades Five through Eight will begin using the innovative and state of the art program through Code.org in order to learn how to code. Students will start some time during this month.  Coding for Grades Kindergarten through Four will begin during the month of February.
  6. Registration: At this time, if you are interested or know anyone interested in any of our programs, especially Nursery and Pre-K for All, please let us know as soon as possible and have them make an appointment for Touring Tuesday. We give priority registration to interested families from within the Queen of the Rosary community.  Priority registration will be given from January 23, 2017 until Friday, February 3, 2017.  I have received many inquiries from prospective families.  Please let me know of your interest as soon as possible.

Teachers will be distributing a letter this month detailing their exact requirements for Mathletics.  Currently, our students have been awarded 202 Bronze Certificates and 16 Silver Certificates, since beginning the program in September.  Last month, our grand totals were 109 Bronze Certificates and 8 Silver Certificates.  This is an 86.32% growth from the previous month.

Round 1 registration for our PreK for All program will begin on January 17, 2017.  Round 1 registration will run from January 17, 2017 through February 24, 2017.  Nursery parents and anyone who knows someone interested in registering for Pre-K for All please call or have the person call and make an appointment to meet with me about how to register and to learn about the requirements.  The following dates are:

January 4, 5, 9, 11, 12, 18, and 19, 2017 from 7:00AM-8:00AM and from 5:00PM-7:00PM

The enterprising spirit of this community has me elated each day.  This energetic spirit has created within the community a positive experience for the children each day when they come to school.  I look forward to continuing the progress that has been made.

December 1, 2016

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone has enjoyed their Thanksgiving holiday with their families.  Thanksgiving always reminds me of togetherness and the importance of community.  We feel safer when we are surrounded by positive influences and a strong family.  This is the same type of community that we have been providing at the school.  Each day as our partnership grows our family community continues to strengthen.  This is critical and what we hope to foster each day as the children walk through these doors.

This month we have much to look forward to.  Some of the things that we have to look forward to are our:

  1. Touring Tuesdays: If you know anyone who is interested, please have them make an appointment in order to see the Academy. Registration will begin in January of 2017 for our Nursery, Kindergarten through Grade Eight, and PreK for All programs.
  2. Christmas Show: Grades Nursery-Grade Four, After-School Band, Choir, and select Grades Five-Eight will perform in the Christmas Show on Friday, December 16, 2016. Information about the show will follow.
  3. Snack Sale, sponsored by our Eighth Grade, will occur on December 7, 2016 in order to support some of the events that they will have during their last year at Queen of the Rosary.
  4. Breakfast with Santa on Tuesday, December 15, 2016.
  5. Report cards will be distributed on December 7, 2016. Please call in order to make an appointment with your child’s teacher.
  6. Home Academy Association’s meeting, which will be Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at 6:00p.m. All are invited to attend.  If you cannot attend, please know that your input is vitally important, so all ideas are welcome.
  7. Clubs for the Second Trimester. The first trimester clubs were huge success with the students.  Starting after the New Year, the next round of clubs will begin.  Look out for information.

Students in grades three through eight have been utilizing Mathletics.  Last month, we had a total of 68 Bronze Certificates and 1 Silver Certificate for the year.  Now, we have 109 Bronze Certificates and 8 Silver Certificates.  Our students are out-performing many schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn.   These achievements will help prepare the school for the Mathletics Math Bowl competition that will take place in March of 2017.  Details of the event will follow.

Our coding program for grades kindergarten through eight will begin soon.  Once the materials have arrived, students will begin learning basic computer programming skills.  Usernames and passwords for the program have been created for each student, so that when the materials arrive, we will be ready to begin.

As you may remember, we received a grant from the Hyde and Watson Foundation.  Through their generous grant, we were able to purchase 52 Chromebooks and two Luxor charging stations.  Recently, we received a grant from the Jewish Communal Fund, which will allow us to purchase an additional 54 Chromebooks and two more Luxor charging stations.  This will allow us the opportunity to supply an individual Chromebook to all students from grades three through eight.  In addition, our students, beginning with grade eight, have begun using Google Classroom in order to submit assignments through Google Docs.

All of the great events that are organized for the school are posted on Facebook.  At your earliest convenience, visit Facebook and LIKE our page.  The location of our page is: Facebook.com/QueenOfTheRosaryCatholicAcademy.  Our page contains many great pictures and news about what is happening in the school.  Please SHARE our Facebook with your friends, so that they know all about our wonderful Academy.

Round 1 registration for our PreK for All program will begin on January 17, 2017.  Round 1 will run from January 17, 2017 through February 24, 2017.  Nursery parents will be receiving a schedule that will contain a series of meetings in order to discuss the process to apply for our program.  Those dates and times are being determined, and you will receive notification shortly.  In addition, these dates and times will be available on our website and Facebook, so please forward that information to any other prospective registrant.

I hope you are sharing in the excitement of all that we have at Queen of the Rosary and all that we offer to your children.  I am very proud of the hard work and dedication of our Home Academy Association who work relentlessly to enhance our students’ experiences.

Sincerely,

Dear Parents,

Thank you to those parents who sent in baby wipes!

This week, we will begin Unit 3: All About Us. We will talk how we and our families are unique. I will send home a piece of white paper so you can glue some of the pictures that you would like your child to share with the class about their unique family. It could be pictures of the people in your family, where relatives live, things the family likes to do together, celebrations, vacations, etc.). We will put them together to make “A Family Quilt” and hang them up in our classroom. Please send this by Thursday, November 17th. Thank you!

In Math, we will start with a simple addition. In our literacy center, we will identify the letter Hh. Also, this week, we will begin to talk about Thanksgiving. We will learn about the Pilgrims and Native Americans and read stories about Thanksgiving. We will listen to Native American music.

Reminders:

  • Please remember to sign your child in and out of school every day.
  • Ice cream is sold on Friday for $1.25.
  • For Show and Tell on Friday, please bring one item that begins with the letter H.
  • Our Thanksgiving feast will be on Tuesday, November 22nd in our classroom. If you would like to donate cookies, chips, fruit, or juice for our feast, please let me know by Monday (11/21). Thank you!
  • Next week, we will make our classroom “cookbook.” Please write down your child’s favorite food recipe and your child can decorate that page. Send it to school by Monday (11/21). Thank you for your cooperation!

Have a nice week!

Principal’s Monthly Newsletter

November 2, 2016

Dear Parents,

It has been two months, and I am feeling more energized, enthused, and excited about all the amazingly fun and thrilling events that have been organized and concluded since the time that our school year began.  We have been very busy making sure that school is not only academically driven but driven for the development of the entire child.  In order to ensure achievement, our partnership must continue to grow, and how we work together must be enhanced.  As each day passes, our partnership and collaboration grows, which is going to make our community stronger and more unified.  As we continue to strengthen this unification, I am reminded of the importance of never ceasing when momentum is high.  Therefore, I will continue to work tirelessly to continue the process of ensuring that activities benefit your child’s experiences.

I want to take this time to thank the Home Academy Association (HAA) for working tirelessly to ensure a successful event for the children.  The Lunch-O-Ween Event was extremely successful, and that is due to your diligence, determination, and perseverance in ensuring that the children and parents who participate had a great time.  The wonderment of this event was felt and so was your presence.  Thank you for all that you do.  In addition, for those parents who have not been able to attend a meeting, I want you to know that you are still welcome to participate.  If you are interested, please contact the President of the HAA, Javier Cortes (jcortesinc@gmail.com).  Find out how you can be involved in this great organization.

Where there are great parents, there are great students.  The students who attend our amazing Academy have many accomplished many things in the past month.  One major accomplishment is due to our Student Council.  The students planned a very positive and fun experience for Spirit Week.  Another major accomplishment is the number of certificates that our students in Grade 3-8 have received since starting the Mathletics program.  Our students have received 68 Bronze Certificates and 1 Silver Certificate.  In addition, Ms. Aime’s Grade 4 class was ranked 12 out of 50 when compared to all of the other classes in the country who use Mathletics during one week in October.  We are proud of the entire fourth grade and Ms. Aime for the hard work that is involved with motivating and energizing students to reach such a feat.  Great job!

The teachers in this wonderful Academy have been trained on utilizing Code.org for our K-8 students.  Code.org is an innovative program where children will learn the basics of computer programming, so that when they are approached with more difficult concepts in computer science, they will be more prepared for what lies ahead.  Coding should begin in Trimester II, once the schedules are organized and the material from Code.org is received.

Our Academy’s first school-wide major fundraiser, the World’s Finest Chocolate Sale, has just concluded.  This event was a huge hit for our school.  Once all sales have been tallied, winners will be announced.

I am very proud of what has been done, but there is still much to do.  I look forward to continue working relentlessly in order to grow our partnership to new heights.

Sincerely,

James A. Daino

Principal
